How do I connect with my target audience? – Susan Komoto

How do I connect with my target audience?

In today’s LEARN OUT LOUD segment, I wanted to explore a question with you that I asked myself when I first began my business. I revisit it every day when I’m creating content. And it’s a hot topic with my mentoring clients and my business partners.

How do I connect with my target audience?
That’s a great question… I tell myself (because yes… I do talk to myself when I’m creating content… and maybe all day long… such is the life of a work from home mom who is surrounded by tiny humans under 3 feet tall…), and I tell my clients and business partners.
That’s a really great question.
Let’s dig deeper.
In order to know how to connect with your target audience, you have to begin with identifying who your target audience is.
Okay… so your mind may initially rush to… “okay, so, they are women… ages 25-55… living in English speaking countries… who…” you get the picture.
And yes… while that is all important information to know when you are running ads, it is not going to help you attract your ideal client or partner. It’s not going to help you connect with your ideal client or partner.
Attracting, and connecting with, your ideal client or partner begins with a much more intimate process.

When my friend and mentor helped walked me through this process for the first time, it was a like I had received a new pair of prescription glasses. Before this, things were forming in front of me, but they were fuzzy and I couldn’t pull then into focus. Then once I started viewing everything through this new lens, everything became sharp. Everything became clear. Things began lining up and falling into place.

Okay, okay… so what was this great epiphany you ask? Let’s walk through it together…

Your audience is not an ideal set of demographics.

Your audience is one specific person. Just one.

Huh? How does that work?? How can you reach a broad group of people if you are only creating content for one person??

You can’t be everything to everyone, but by sharing yourself authentically with one person you can attract many. By creating content for one person, by having a conversation with one person, you can be unapologetically you.

"Your sole purpose is to serve them."

So, who is this person? What is their name? What does a typical day look like in their life? How old are they? Are they married? Do they have kids? Do they have a job? What does their day look like from the moment they open their eyes in the morning to the moment they close their eye in the evening? What social media platforms are they on? What groups do they follow online? What do they read? What sports do they play or follow? What are they afraid of? What is keeping them up at night? What danger may be around the corner that they don’t see coming? What is the biggest opportunity that exists now that they don’t know about yet? What are their ultimate hopes and dreams?

Create a real person and develop a real relationship with them. Craft all of your content so that you connecting with them, and opening their eyes to the reality of the fact that all of their hopes and dreams are within their grasp.

Your sole purpose is to serve them.

That’s a far cry from a set of demographics... isn’t it?

Makes you go hmmmm… doesn't it?? 😉

So… what about you? Do you know who you’re talking to?
